Themed Issue Announcement: Contemporary biodiversity challenges and economic responses
11/12/2023 | 03:56:02
The Journal of Economics and Development (JED) invites submissions for a themed issue on “The Economics of Biodiversity and Natural Capital”, guest edited by distinguished researchers from Lincoln University, New Zealand.
Biodiversity loss represents one of the most complex challenges of our time, alongside climate change, increasing trade, geopolitical tensions, and global inequality. Biodiversity contributes to critical ecosystem services that sustain human well-being, economic productivity, and environmental stability. Nevertheless, economic systems and business practices remain among the most significant drivers of biodiversity decline worldwide.
Economic activities, particularly those tied to land use, extractive industries, infrastructure expansion, and consumer markets, continue to exert unsustainable pressure on ecosystems worldwide. Consequently, policymakers, investors, and corporate leaders are calling for the integration of biodiversity consideration into decision-making processes.
This themed issue aims to bridge the disciplines of economics, business, and ecological science to conceptualize biodiversity loss as a systemic economic risk, rather than a purely environmental issue. The editors call for submissions that critically engage with the economic implications of biodiversity and natural capital, exploring how policy, corporate strategies, and financial markets respond to nature-related risks and opportunities.
Authors are encouraged to utilize emerging datasets such as ENCORE, the Swiss Re Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Index, and firm-level biodiversity risk databases for empirical exploration. Diverse methodologies are also welcome.
Submission is open from October 15, 2025, to April 30, 2026, with the final acceptance decision to be announced by October 15, 2026. For inquiries, please contact Dr. Khanh Hoang (khanh.hoang@lincoln.ac.nz) or the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Vu Hung (nguyenvuhung@neu.edu.vn).
